About

SES, headquartered in Luxembourg, is one of the world’s leading satellite operators, managing a fleet of over 70 satellites across geostationary (GEO) and medium Earth orbits (MEO). It is especially known for its O3b network, which delivers low-latency broadband to underserved regions, and for its hybrid GEO + MEO strategy that combines wide-area coverage with fiber-like connectivity. SES serves a diverse range of customers—including broadcasters, mobile operators, governments, maritime, aviation, and enterprises—offering services such as video distribution, direct-to-home broadcasting, mobility connectivity, and cloud-optimized satellite solutions. Recently, SES announced its purchase of Intelsat, bringing together two of the world’s largest satellite operators to create a global leader in multi-orbit communications and broadcasting.

Intelsat, based in McLean, Virginia, is the oldest and one of the largest commercial satellite operators, with a global fleet of more than 50 satellites in GEO. Founded in 1964 as an intergovernmental consortium and privatized in 2001, Intelsat has long been a backbone of global communications, supporting television broadcasting, in-flight connectivity, maritime broadband, enterprise networking, and secure government communications. While SES differentiates itself with its multi-orbit innovation, Intelsat leverages its extensive GEO infrastructure and deep legacy in global media distribution and connectivity. Together, they represent two of the most influential players in shaping satellite-powered communications worldwide.

The STN program will support strategic long-haul network transport and base-support communications for combat service support, the Department of Defense (DoD), and other U.S. government agencies. Under the contract, SES Space & Defense, working with the Commercial Satellite Communications Office (CSCO), will provide commercial Ku-band geostationary satellite service to ensure secure, global connectivity. The service will leverage commercial teleports, specialized equipement, and COMSATCOM links, integrated with terrestrial-based network infrastructure to connect Global Network Centers (GNC) and teleports, delivering a cohesive and resilient communications network for mission critical operations.

NSPA Awards $200M MEO Global Services Contract to SES
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded SES a contract to deliver secure, high-performance, low-latency satellite services via its medium earth orbit (MEO) constellation. This capability will allow global missions for NATO member governments, agencies, and military forces. The MEO Global Services (MGS) contract is a three-year Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement values at $200 million, with two optional one-year extensions. this contract is the first under the Global Contracted Satellite Communications Support Partnership (GCC SATCOM SP), established by the United Stated and Luxembourg under NSPA auspices. Through this contract, NATO counties will gain acces to SES's global end-to-end commercial managed services network and national sovereign networks leveraging O3b mPower services. the O3b mPower system delivers interoperability, flexibility, and government-controlled secure communications, enabling tactical units to operate with resilient, mission-critical connectivity worldwide.

U.S Army Awards $3.6M SaaMS Pilot Contracts to SES Space & Defense
The United States Army has awarded SES Space & Defense with $3.6 million ceiling blanket purchase agreement for the pilot program to provide Satellite Communications (SATCOM) as a Managed Service (SaaMS). This contract aims to streamline commercially leased SATCOM network services to provide a flexible, mission-tailored communications needs. Awarded to Global Enterprise Solutions (GES) that was aquired by SES in 2022, the SaaMS Pilot will offer a turnkey, end-to-end managed subscription service. this includes connectivity to commercial teleports and internaet services, augmenting SATCOM capabilities at fiver diverse locations spanning three combatant commands: NORTHCOM, EUCOM, and USINDOPACOM. The program will operate under gauranteed Service Level Agreements (SLAs), ensuring service availability and commited information rates across all service areas. Support will be provided by SES Space & Defense's 24/7 global Network Operations and Security Center (NOSC), integrated with its glaship information and Communications Technology (ICT) Portal. This setup delivers real-time network visibility and situational awareness for U.S. Army customers.

SES GOVSATCOM REACH meets the needs of governmental and instituational user requiring performance comparable to dedicated Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) links, with flexibility of platform-based services. it delivers constant, symmetrical bitrates for high-demand applications such as real-time, high-data-rate streaming from fixed or mobile platforms. Users can configure service via an online mission-planning platform, specifying activation date, geographic coverage, and dervice duration. GOVSATCOM supports end-to-end encryption and incorporates operational features for interference and jamming mitigation, ensuring secure and uniterrupted communications in any operational environment.

Quantum Key Distribution
SES provides quantum-resistant technology to protect government communications against emerging cyber threats. The Satellite Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) leverages the principle of quantum mechanics to securely generate and exchange encryption keys to ensure any interception attempt, even from quantum computers, is instantly detectable. QKD provides global coverage for secure key distribution accross long distances, including remote and isolated regions beyong the reach of terrestrial fiber networks. By using quantum entanglement and single-photon transmission, QKD allows for tamper-proof key exchanges with immediate detection of eavesdropping attempts. SES addresses vulnerabilities posed by advancing quantum technology to deliver long-term protection for critical communications and sensitive data. QKD integrates seamlessly into existing networks without service interruptions, enhancing traditional encryption protocols rather than replacing them. AS part of this commitment SES is preparing to demostrate end-to-end QKD using its EAGLE-1 low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites, paving the way for a new era of ultra-secure, space-enabled communications.

Navigation
SES decade long experience provides experience hosting payloads, and operating global satellite networks, SES supports a wide range of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) downstream applications. SES delivers navigation solutions, operations support, and mission-critical networks for tracking, telemetry, and ground station connectivity worldwide. SES's Medium Earth Orbit capabilities provide global coverage for navigational services. The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) has hosted payloads on SES GEO satellites that enhance navigation signals across Europe for improved accuracy, integrity, and reliability. SES provides cybersecurity expertise and services underpinning activities for both EGNOS and Galileo. its resilient satellite network ensures Galileo's ground stations remain operational and accessible, even during primary network disruptions. SES also conducts in-orbit testing to validate the operational status of Galileo satellites and detect potential anomalies.

Future Launches/Services

EAGLE-1 Launch
SES will lead a consortium of 20 European companies, with the European Space Agency (ESA) and European Commision support to launch EAGLE-1 for end-to-end system for secure Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). A dedicated QKD Operations Center will be established in Luxembourg to oversee mission operations. Eagle-1 will deliver mission data critical to developing the next generation of Quantum Communication Infrastructures (QCIs) and will contribute to the European Union's plans for a sovereign, autonomous, cross-border quantum-secure communications network. Scheduled for launch in 2026, EAGLE-1 will operate for a three-year in-orbit mission supported by the European Commission. During this mission, it will provide early access to long-distance QKD for European Governments and Institutions. The consortium plans to develop the QKD payload, a terrestrial optical station, scalable quantum operational networks, a key management system to interface with the nations QCIs.

O3b mPOWER Launch
The final three O3b mPOWER satellites are currently in production and are scheduled for launch in 2026. Once the full constellation is deployed in 2027, it will deliver a threefold increase in available capacity, significantly expanding the system's ability to provide high-throughput, low-latency connectivity to government, defense, and commercial users globally.
